I started off on a fitness/wellness journey alone, without guidance, and Shakera invited me into a challenge for a month where she provided a meal plan complete with recipes for the more difficult dishes. I learned that I can enjoy meatless dishes, and be creative with my food! Who knew curried chickpeas and collard greens were such a great pairing, or that a portabella mushroom cap doubles as a beef patty? I learned simple ways to plan my Meals, portion control, and lost 10lbs in a month by following her plan and exercising. The motivation, support and availability of her coaching are unrivaled. I met Shakera shortly after being diagnosed with a rare cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. At that point I had lost over 30 pounds, basically lived in the hospital, and had a grave diagnosis. Doctors only had the plan of chemotherapy, medications, radiation, and surgery but I knew that nutrition and taking responsibility for your own health could go a long way. When I was first diagnosed I actually had a doctor tell me “you can eat whatever you want”. The very first visit from Shakera drastically changed the way I ate and thought about food. I immediately added foods, shopping tips, and recipes that I continue to use on a daily basis. I’m at the point now where I don’t even have a taste for less healthy foods and I can physically feel the difference when eating something healthy vs. less healthy. Today I’m 20 pounds closer to my healthy weight, feel fantastic, and am almost done my cancer treatment. Things had been going so well that my original diagnosis of 1 year of chemotherapy was cut in half. Doctors are constantly using words like “remarkable” and “amazing” but when I tell them it’s because of diet and exercise they still remain skeptical. You have a lot more control of your health (through nutrition) than a lot of people realize, I thank Shakera for helping me realize that.

Before working with Shakera I was eating a diet very high in fried foods, cakes, cookies, and candy. My sugar cravings were out of control, and so was my blood sugar. I was diagnosed with diabetes many years ago, and began taking medication and monitoring my blood sugar daily.
When I began working with Shakera the program was challenging, as it was completely different from what I was used to. For many years I ate what I wanted, not realizing that what I was eating directly contributed to the medications I was on. After giving the new lifestyle a real try for 6 months I received amazing news following a routine doctors appointment. For the first time in many years my cholesterol levels were normal, as well as my blood sugar. So much so I no longer had to take the medication to regulate the diabetes.
Being able to get my blood sugar under control and being about to stop taking medications means a better quality of life for me. I am able to be more active, my mind is sharper, and each time I see my doctor I’m told I look younger and younger. I couldn’t be happier. I have a life worth living with less pain and less medications, I couldn't be happier.

I was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in January 2011, but according to my neurologist I should have been diagnosed in 1990. I had my first episode (optic neuritis) in the Fall of 1990. After that initial episode, I suffered from various symptoms associated with MS: tingling in my fingers and toes, numbness in my extremities and a sensation of burning down my legs, for no apparent reason. I was initially told I was suffering from depression and began taking anti-depressants. In subsequent years, I suffered from inexplicable tiredness, which I now know was MS fatigue.
After my 2011 diagnosis I began taking Rebif injections (three times a week). Rebif is designed to reduce the number and severity of relapses and delay disability in some people. Great right? Wrong. While using Rebif I experienced terrible side effects… pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site, flu-like symptoms such as headache, fatigue, fever, chills, and muscle aches. Imagine feeling as if you have the flu several times a week. I continued taking the injections for a little over two years. In the Spring of 2013, Shakera suggested I try to control my disease by switching to a mostly organic mostly plant based diet. Since May 2013 I’ve been doing just that. Shakera developed a meal and fitness plan that I try follow every day. Since changing my diet I’ve stopped taking the injections. I can honestly say I feel much better. My symptoms have diminished and the fatigue has been reduced. I sleep well and no longer have to deal with flu-like symptoms. Diet and fitness are so important in disease management. Thank you Shakera for showing me the way.

This time last year, I was tipping the scale at 220 lbs. I was experiencing tightness in my chest, shortness of breath and I was always tired. At age 27 that's a problem, a problem at any age really. I then sought advice from Shakera, whom a friend had told me of. When I contacted her via phone, she was warm and ever so passionate about me undergoing a lifestyle change. She stayed on the phone with me for almost 2,hrs advising me on my daily routine and meals. She showed me how to do workout routines right in my living room. She helped me with my meal preparations and helped me to lose 30 lbs.! I thank you Shakera, you are an inspiration.
